Shark!!
The end of a fairly busy and eventful week…
Business wise attorneys, bankers and brokers – all good & some interesting. Hate the call on a Fri afternoon 5:05pm which you can’t do anything about until Mon – nice one.
Lots of preparation for K’s birthday – thought she would be up really early but as she couldn’t get to sleep, she only woke up around 6am. We did the traditional candle in a cup-cake and a three-tenor version of happy birthday. I baked the cup-cakes which were half cake and half rich choc icing – why not? Took a while bunch to school which went down well.
After school, all packed up and went to watch K for a special birthday horse lesson – good fun – met a new addition, Charlotte the goat who came with a bucket of meusli bars [choc coated]. Kids washed Dutchess after – made sure everyone got cleaned! Got some noodle box t/aways for a special dinner. Of course the road popped in to wish K but lucky it was quiet and early[ish]
Really wanted a kayak fish in the morning but Gav & Gareth wanted an afternoon fish, so worked-went to a 2:30 meeting and met them 5:30pm. They are fully kitted unlike me – apparently my kayak is a whale whisperer, to whale 1000km’s away! Not the most stream-lined one in the Gulf but hey, it floats! Gav caught a nice snapper – Gareth arrived a caught a nice snapper – me, all quiet. They had the soft bait [plastic] and I had the real stuff. First I thought I was snagged-cool, got loose-damn, snagged again-cool, loose – hold one, may be a fish-yahhhooooo it’s a biggy and not a snapper [you know the difference in the fight]-must be a kingi [kingfish-can be upto 40kg's+] – get some line in – off it goes again – get in close – see the large shadow coming close – it’s huge – yahooo [getting Gav& Gareth attention] – then it comes closer and drifts under the kayak – SHARK!!!! Only when it got real close saw it was a hammerhead at least 1,5m. Eventually Gav came over to assist and put the noses of the kayaks together and he pulled the trace up & the shark – stunning huge fish. I wanted to keep it but knew that it’s not great eating and better to release, which we did. Heart pumping stuff – not another nibble -got off the water at sunset around 8:45pm and home by 9:30, just in time for a shower, dinner and a knock at the door 10:30pm Wayne& Dyl doing the Fri night rounds. Think it was around 0:00 and 2 drinks when we finally got to sleep.
Sat was K’s party at Shakespear and the list of things to get organised grew during the week. Got everything down to the park at 12 and everyone started arriving 12:45 – about 12 kids and families joined in. Swimming, cricket, soccer, barbie and a few drinks – great afternoon. Carried on at our place when we got back and eventually, people staggered out by 11;30 for yet another full day.
Sun was perfect but chores so up 6am – some work-clean garage-clean barbie-clean up from party-cut trimming from back section-remove weeds by hand [little damage to hand but will heal eventually]-mowed full back section-more work and after losing a few kg’s in the sun-sat down for an early lunch 12:30. Jd hasn’t been great with a cold that won’t quit and K was playing with her presents. Jakkals took kayaks and few followers to Arkels Bay – wanted to join them in the afternoon – however my outdoors family weren’t too keen. So spent the rest of the later afternoon at the computer – not the best way to end a weekend but hey, ahead of the game heading into Mon morning!!
…and Dec has just started!
Holy f’ck
The week that was. It started with a business stress but after a meeting on Thursday in the city, my new attorney called 7:30 Fri evening to guarantee delivery of the outstanding documents-she’ll do it…
So on to Fri with some drinks & dinner at Lee&Carmen – always good fun and xtra good home made pizza. JD got hot & sweaty within an hour or two and was fast asleep on the couch. Kept him cool and had an early night - his temp wasn’t high but felt hot. The weather has been awesome and many boats and kayaks littering the blue, blue, blue ocean.
Sat morning made pancakes for breakfast and decided it was time for some fishing on the wharf for sprats. K always keen and took our guests with for their first time. JD went shopping with Kim. We caught the end of high tide and after it settled, we caught plenty of sprats and two nice size yellow tails. Sheri [lady guest] was all concerned about Liam touching them – about keeping them in water - I tried to explain they were supposed to die as they are going to be cut up in little pieces for bait – got a look? Think she wanted to keep them in a bowl at home?
Good fun, got home-quick lunch and packed everyone off to go to the beach and play on two kayaks we borrowed. Even Kim came with, no guests [went for a nap] and Grant&Mandy&Cameron..had a ball on the kayaks – had to take my fishing rod but only went out on one occasion for a few minutes-nothing. Got home think 6/7 and time for barbie – the beach party all came around after a shower and a quiet evening. JD seemed ok during the day. Had a brain wave, checked the tides, swell map and winds and spoke to Kaminer for a kayak fish in the morning – we’re on. The kayak I borrowed only had to be back Sun afternoon..
On the sea at 7am which is late but K needed a sleep in – everyone with anything that floated was out. Two kayak fishing clubs, boats, long distance kayak clubs – but no fish. We went pretty far out and floated, drifted, sang but I got only one nibble. The chaps, actually a lady with a fish finder said the screen was blank, onky seaweed. Still a near perfect morning – came in at 10am and had to shoot home as the street was around for a champagne barbie/breakfast. Great breakfast with all the frills, quick beer to end off the morning and off Wayne/Dylan/JD and me to a MotoX event in the hills, about 40min away. JD was very excited.
As we arrived and walked to the track, one race just started and they came flying over a jump right in front of us – JD turns to me “Dad, I now it’s an adult word and I’m not supposed to say it but HOLY F’ck” – we cracked up…
We watch a few races and around 2or3 we called it a day – very hot. Got back for some sundowners on the deck. We had planned for a beach swim and kayak in the late afternoon but they were being used, so called it a day. Well sort of because Alisons stayed for drinks-then dinner-which became 8:15 before they left. Still sunny and stunning…
Mon morning and time for a new exciting week – happy 1st Dec
